Scholarships and Bursaries
Here is a partial list of scholarships and bursaries that are available to Aboriginal students. Most are offered to full-time students only. Don't forget to note the application deadline and application criteria. Many universities offer in-house scholarships with varying criteria and it is a good idea to check the school or university's financial aid website for more information. It is now time to register for the 2011-2012 Recognition Awards from the Health Careers Program for First Nations and Inuit.
The Program's goal is to encourage and support First Nations and Inuit participation in educational opportunities leading to professional careers in the health field.
To be admissible for the Awards, you must be:
- Registered at a College or in a Baccalaureat Program at a University; Studying full-time in a Health field; Successful∗ completion of the last two consecutive study sessions; Registered full-time at a post-secondary level in a Health field for the up-coming session.
- ∗Meets the grade requirements set by the program at your educational institution

- You must complete the registration form accompanied with your official transcript from the Fall and Winter sessions of the previous year, a proof of full-time enrolment for the next Fall session as well as a proof that you are a Quebec First Nations or Inuit member. (The documents will be available on the website of the Institut Tshakapesh by the end of August 2011)

The Warren Fellowship is offered at McGill University. The fellowship is being offerend thanks to the generosity of Roger Warren and is open to a deserving First Nations student seeking admission the Doctoral or Master's program at McGill University. One fellowship of $18,000 will be awarded. The applicant's research must focus on some area of the study of Canada. Based on progress reports and participation in the activities of the institute, the award may be twice renewed. Online Colleges.org Support A Student Scholarship for Single Parents - Starting January 1st, a $10,000 scholarship will be awarded 2012 to a single parent who is enrolled in an accredited online post-secondary institution. The scholarship will help pay for non-tuition related living expenses for the 2012 academic year that are not covered by the recipient's current financial aid such as:
- Rent
- Childcare
- Books and School Supplies
- Utilities (Gas/Electric)
- Utilities (Internet Connection)
- Groceries
Please note that the funds will not be sent to the recipient student. Education Aid, Inc. will pay for the expenses directly. The student will be required to provide relevant supporting documentation necessary to validate any expenses being paid for on their behalf.
Requirements:
- Attending an accredited post-secondary institution
- Participating in an online degree program or a campus-based degree program with a significant online component to it (such as online lectures or quizzes)
- Receiving some type of financial aid
- A single parent

AFN’s Heroes of Our Times Scholarships. The scholarships are divided into eight categories that represent eight First Nations heroes and academic disciplines, each with a value of $2,000.

BEAHR- Building Environmental Human Resources
Canadian Aboriginal Science & Technology Society (CASTS): Currently, CASTS administers 3 unique scholarship programs and eligibility varies with each. They are the CASTS Scholarships, the Chief Crowfoot Professional Health Careers Scholarship and Canadian Society of Petroleum Geologists Scholarship.
Canadian Council for Aboriginal Business (CCAB) (See entry under FAAY)
Canadian Medical Foundation has two scholarships for Aboriginal students, including the Big John Canoe scholarship award in the amount of $2,000 for student pursuing a career in medicine. .
Canadian Northern Studies Trust (CNST) Scholarships
Canada Post Aboriginal Education Incentive Award. This prize is awarded to students who are going back to school after a one-year or more interruption. Application period is between May 1st and July 31st of the current year.
FAAY - Foundation for the Advancement of Aboriginal Youth (FAAY): There are several awards for available for high school, post-secondary and graduate categories. All Canadian Aboriginal students (status, non-status, Métis and Inuit) who are studying full time in a high school, college, university, or technical institute in Canada are eligible to apply for funding from FAAY and there is no age limitation. Please check the website for the application deadlines.
GE Foundation Scholars-Leaders Program in Canada: A $4000 per year scholarship for the 2nd, 3rd, and 4th years of your undergraduate program. Participating institutions: University of Alberta • McMaster University • University of Toronto • McGill University • HEC Montréal • École Polytechnique
Global Television Aboriginal Peoples' Internship Award. The award offers an Aboriginal Canadian an opportunity to work in private television in pursuit of a career in broadcasting. The award places the award recipient in a four-month paid internship at one of Global Television stations for the summer of application year. In addition, the Award covers transportation, hotel and attendance expenses at the Canadian Association of Broadcasters (CAB) annual convention in November of each year, where the Award will be presented.
Haudenosaunee Promise Scholarship is a scholarship from Syracuse University in New York State. It is open to citizens of the Haudenosaunee nations and is for first-year or transfer students attending Syracuse University.
Hydro Québec Programme de prix d'excellence pour les étudiants autochtones. The link is for an INAC page that gives general information about the Hydro-Québec prize. Deadline for CEGEP students: July 3. For university students: February 15.
Indigenous Bar Association Law Student Scholarship (Indigenous Bar Association / Association du barreau autochtone) The deadline is June 1st of each year. A Scholarship of $2,000 will be presented each year to an Indigenous law student that best demonstrates financial need, academic merit and commitment to Indigenous legal matters.
Legal Studies for Aboriginal People (LSAP) bursary program. A program administered by the Canadian Department of Justice.
National Aboriginal Achievement Foundation (NAAF): The foundation has scholarships in the following areas: Post-Secondary Education (where you will find the Aboriginal Veterans Scholarship Trust and the Diana Fowler LaBlanc Aboriginal Social Work Scholarship), Health Careers, Fine Arts & Cultural Projects.

Rose
Nolan Memorial Scholarship Fund: Open to Aboriginal women. From the website:
The Rose Nolan Memorial Scholarship Fund was established to recognize Aboriginal
First Nation Women who are achieving their educational / training goals while
maintaining a strong community involvement.
Scholarship awards will be given annually to Aboriginal First Nation Women
who have completed one (1) year of full time studies at any educational or
training endeavour.
(4) $2,000.00 scholarships will be awarded at the Post Secondary Level
Royal Bank Native Student Awards: Each year, five students are awarded $4,000.00 annually for their education expenses, to a maximum of four years at university or two years at college, in disciplines related (but not restricted) to the financial services industry. All status Indians, non-status lndians, Inuit, and Métis are eligible to apply. To be eligible applications must be received at RBC Financial Group by January 31st of each year. Successful applicants will be notified by April 30th.
Completed application package MUST contain:
- FULLY completed application form
- COPY of your most recent transcripts
- LETTER of recommendation from a teacher, employer, or member of your community
Tembec Aboriginal Scholarship: Scholarships are available to Ontario and Quebec residents of Aboriginal ancestry. Proof of ancestry must be included with each application.
Tom Longboat Fund: Scholarship named after famed Onondage althete Tom Longboat. The aim of the scholarship is to recogn Aboriginal excellence in sports.
Xerox
Canada. $3,000 dollars every year, renewable for a maximum of four years
for Canadian university programs and three years for Canadian community college
programs. Aimed at, but not limited to studies in Business Administration,
Commerce,
Information Technology Program (network technician, programmer, analyst),
Computer/ Math Science and Engineering.
