Superkid Program
Through the Superkid program Aronhiatékha encourages students
- to arrive at school on time
- to not miss school days unnecessarily
- to make sure homework is always done
- to not have detentions throughout the month
Catch of the Day Program
The Catch of the Day program is the school's way of teaching students to live courteously and conscientiously. Students who exemplify these traits are awarded with a Catch of the Day certificate when teachers notice them doing something especially kind, helpful, or responsible. During the school's monthly Superkid assembly 5-10 names from the Catch of the Day program are picked and those students are awarded a small treat.
Ice Rink
Aronhiatékha has access to the ice rink behind the school thanks to the Recreation Department. For safety reasons, only children who can tie their own skates and can actually skate will be permitted to use the ice rink. Students must bring and wear a helmet while on the ice. Please make sure your child's name is written on all their equipment. The following skating schedule is being used in order to properly watch out for the safety of the children.
Students from Grades 1-2-3 can skate during lunchtime on Tuesdays. Grades 4-5-6 can skate during lunchtime on Thursdays.
Healthy Eating Program
Aronhiatékha has partnered with the Kanesatake Health Center Inc. to help encourage healthy eating habits. Aronhiatékha believes that children who eat breakfast do better in school and are more likely to participate in physical activities. Children who are encouraged to adopt healthy eating habits at school tend to eat healthier in general. Some suggestions for quick and healthy breakfasts are:
- Cereal
- Yogurt
- Fresh fruit
- Trail mix (nuts, dried fruit, pretzels)
- Breakfast bars
Traditional breakfast ideas:
- Eggs, French toast, waffles or pancakes
- Cold cereal and milk
- Hot cereal such as: oatmeal or Cream of Wheat (try some dried fruits or nuts on top)
- Whole grain toast, bagel, low-fat muffin, or English muffin with cheese
- Yogurt with fruits or nuts
- Fruit smoothie, such as strawberry
Healthy snacks:
- A glass of low fat milk
- A few Graham crackers
- An apple or celery sticks with peanut butter and raisins
- Some dry cereal
Recipe: Super Strawberry Bars:
- 1 cup flour
- 1 cup rolled oats
- 1/2 cup butter or margarine
- 1/3 cup brown sugar
- 1/4 teaspoon baking powder
- 1/8 teaspoon salt
- 3/4 cup strawberry jam
Once a month Aronhiatékha hosts a special breakfast to help make sure students eat a healthy breakfast. In the past, the school has served a continental breakfast and a pancake breakfast. This has been made possible due to the generosity of the Kanesatake Health Center Inc.
